Are you concerned that there is mold in your air ducts? Perhaps you swear you can see mold growing, or perhaps you can’t see it, but you are afraid mold is inside them and being circulated around the house through your heating and cooling system. Is this a valid concern? Should you be worried?
Can mold grow inside the air ducts of a home or business? Yes, absolutely, but it’s actually a very common occurrence. “I can see mold on my ducts with my own eyes!” In that case, you probably don’t need to have it tested. Instead, you can skip that step and go straight to work rectifying the problem. The first plan of action is to take a look around for any signs of moisture or water, especially in the darker, more hidden areas of your residence.
If you’re simply concerned about mold and there is no “visual evidence” that you can see, you can do one of two things: 1) you can hire a professional mold testing company, or 2) you can be on the safe side and have your air ducts cleaned, especially if it’s been awhile since they’ve been serviced. You may need to do one or the other, or both.
If you have never cleaned your air ducts since you moved into the home, or if you guess it’s been more than three years since they’ve been cleaned, it would be wise to have an HVAC specialist from Green Home Solutions take a look at your air ducts and the other components of your heating and cooling system to see if they need to be serviced.
“Why should I clean my air ducts?” According to the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA), “In addition to normal accumulations of dust and dirt found in all homes with air ducts, there are several other factors that can increase the need for regular HVAC system cleaning,” including: pets, residents with asthma or allergies, cigarette smoke, water contamination or damage to the HVAC system, and home renovation projects.
Should I Clean My Air Ducts?
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), you should clean your air ducts when any of the following applies:
- You suspect there is mold inside your air ducts.
- There is substantial visible evidence of mold growth on a hard surface, such as sheet metal or anywhere else in your ducts or the HVAC system.
- You see rodents or insects going inside or exiting the ductwork.
- The ducts are clogged with a lot of dust.
